POS Index January 2017 through September 2018
The POS Index is a representation of a significant number of manufacturers POS activity that are primarily engaged in the electronic components industry. Products that will be included in the index are passive/electromechanical in nature, including (but not specific to) commodities such as wire & cable, switches, connectors, circuit protection, electronic hardware, resistors, capacitors, et.al. The index charts POS activity beginning with January of 2017 as its base point and then compares POS by month.
When starting a new calendar year, our index is structured so that the new base point is the beginning of the previous year. Therefore, January of 2017 now becomes the new base point. We have also added five new manufacturers into the mix. This will bring the number of manufacturers included in the index up to over ninety companies. The Budde Marketing POS Index is arguably the most complete benchmark of POS activity that our industry has at this time.
September of 2018 was 7% greater than the index point of January, 2017 but flat vs. September, 2017 numbers. September was expected to dip slightly because August is traditionally a strong POS month. Every month in 2018 has continued to outperform the same month in 2017, although September was only very slightly above September of 2017.
First nine months of 2018 POS numbers are 8% ahead of same time period of 2017. 2018 continues to see solid growth for the industry. Industry POS numbers continue to be very solid in 2018, and there’s no indication that it’s going to slow down. Almost all companies being polled are ahead of last year’s POS.
